Reviews from Campers
"My boyfriend and I scheduled a very last minute stay at the Tawney Campgrounds and our trip turned out to be absolutely fantastic! We actually got lost on the way, but were able to get in contact with Susan, and her husband actually found us and guided us to the grounds. They bent over backwards for us, having a fire ready when we got there, and since it was late they even offered us the cabin to stay in for the night free of charge. The next day they drove us up to the gorgeous campgrounds and helped up unload all of our things - seeing as we were pretty inexperienced. THEN, the next day they picked us up from our site.. It was so kind and we were so grateful to not have to take 2 trips back to the car. I would recommend this place to absolutely anyone that's an outdoorsy person. This place really makes you feel at home away from home. I loved it and am planning on going back as soon as possible! Also, they have live music at certain points in the year. This place has it all!" --Ali S.
"Extremely generous family. Upon returning from our kayak trip, we found that James had kept our fire burning - such a joy to come back to. Great location and facilities. Would definitely recommend others stay at this campsite." --Matthew G.
"10/10 would return! Susan and James were the perfect hosts. They provided us with detailed directions to help us find their farm. Once on their 130 acre sheep farm we truly felt at home. They were both so welcoming, and incredibly helpful. They showed us the local trails and waterfalls, and even drove our cooler and some of their own supplies to the top of their mountain for us.
We ended up staying at both the top campsite - which offered the feeling of true seclusion - as well as, at their main property which offered many amenities (water, freezer, hot shower, etc.). Each morning they were kind enough to check that we had everything we needed for breakfast - especially, some farm fresh eggs! My friends and I would love to visit Susan and James (and their adorable dog, Flo) again!" --Ellen M.
"Susan and James have created a magical mountain Oasis, which is perfect if you just want to relax but also be surrounded by adventure ! The Gauley River is just a short hike away to explore and take a swim or just stick around the working farm which has plenty of room to stretch out . Summersville Lake is also just a short drive away with its stunning views and clear water it’s a paddlers dream ! There just wasn’t enough time in our short stay to see everything that West Virginia has to offer and we will definitely be returning to Tawney Farm!" --Shawn M.
"Susan and James were wonderful hosts! We were greeted upon arrival by Susan and their dog, Flo, who is the sweetest, happiest pup, and we were given a tour of the grounds and facilities, which were very well groomed and very clean. Our hosts were very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas, and very helpful in getting us settled and going where we wanted to go. While they are wonderful to talk to, and have many stories to tell, they are also respectful of their guests' privacy. The gifts that are made from the wool of their own beloved sheep, and are available for purchase are beautiful, and my cats LOVE the toys I bought. I couldn't have asked for a better, safer, or more welcoming experience than camping at Tawney Farm." --Hannah L.
"The Gauley River Wild & Woolly Primitive Campground was a great place to camp! Susan and James were very friendly and provided everything you could ask for a weekend of camping. Our first night it rained pretty heavily and Susan and James replaced our firewood with dry firewood to use. Susan also very helpful in giving us directions and recommendations of places to check out during our stay. If you are planning a camping trip in WV, I definitely recommend Tawney Farm!" --Taylor C.
"Susan and James were amazing hosts. We felt extremely welcomed and the site exceeded all expectations. We had everything we needed and our hosts made sure of it! Their facilities were very clean and well kept. We could not have asked for a better camping experience." --Brett S.
"Beautiful location, great hosts. Spotless bathrooms and nice quiet spot. Great for our family of four with young children." --Catherine K.
"Susan and James were great, just checked us in and left us to chill. We loved the private setting of Tawney Farm and the river access was ideal - the road to the river is literally right at the end of their driveway. Although we weren't there for whitewater season, the tubing was great and the river was nice and cold in July. We took a 24 foot RV there with no problem. Definitely going back on a regular basis". --Eric H.
"Susan and James are great hosts, they made us feel welcome and happily answered every question we asked. The site, bathrooms, and shower where very clean, the shower was the most comfortable outdoor shower we've ever seen. We even got fresh eggs before heading back home. It was great, highly recommended." --Zoraida S.
"We had a great time at Tawney Farm. I would recommend their camp ground to anyone looking to stay in the area." --Christopher T.
"This farm land is a gem in West Virginia and Susan is wonderful as well!!! There are so many nice amenities. If you are not a kayaker, check to see if it is Gauley season as the place will be full of boaters (although that’s not necessarily a bad thing ;-)" --Mary M.
"If you like driving deep into WV hill country and camping among the stars, this is your place. The hosts are friendly and nice!" --Darren S.
